KAFOs (Knee ankle foot orthoses)
A KAFO is a orthotic device that provides stability and assistance to the knee, ankle and foot. They are most suitable for users who have muscle weakness or paralysis or a lower limb deformity which makes walking or standing more difficult. They are custom made devices which aim to:
- Improve joint stability
- Prevent excessive movement at joints such as hyperextension
- Improve joint/limb alignment
- Reduce pain
- Increase mobility
Depending on your requirements our experienced orthotists will design your KAFO using specific materials and adaptations. Traditionally KAFOs are made using thermoplastics and metals however we are also able to use modern materials such as carbon fibre to increase strength and reduce the weight of the device.
At Manchester Orthotics we pride ourselves in providing the latest available technology and are able to provide our users with access to the C-Brace and the E-MAG Active.
The C-Brace is controlled using microprocessor technology to provide control during both the swing and stance phase of walking. The C-Brace adapts and adjusts depending throughout the gait cycle providing the user with increased levels of support.
The E-MAG Active is also an intelligent KAFO and uses electromagnets and sensors to control the locking mechanism throughout walking. This helps to improve safety as the sensors will lock the knee joint throughout the stance phase of the gait cycle.
To ensure you receive the most suitable KAFO for your needs our experienced orthotists will complete a full assessment including gait analysis, measurements and a cast or scan will also be taken. All of this information will then aid our orthotists to create your perfect prescription.
