There are many types of AFO including rigid AFO, Hinged AFO, Dynamic AFO, prefabricated AFO, and silicon AFO. AFOs can be beneficial for conditions such as foot drop or reduced ankle stability. The type of AFO required depends on numerous factors such as the function required of the device, the level of mobility, the condition of the client.
Types of orthotics
We are unique in the fact that as we are independent which enables us to provide orthotics from all orthotics manufacturers. This allows us greater choice and allows us to provide the best orthotic for each individual’s needs and requirements.
Insoles are usually custom casted and manufactured in our lab. Our insoles are manufactured from various materials including EVA, polypropylene and carbon fibre. The material selected is dependent on many factors including the weight of the client, the reason for the insoles, the type of footwear that the inserts are to be used with. Insoles can be beneficial for many conditions including plantar fasciitis, knee pain. back pain, foot / ankle pain, and flat feet.
There are many different type of splints to help support a drop foot. Whether it is prefabricated, custom made or silicon our orthotist will carefully assess you for the most appropriate brace to suit your individual needs and lifestyle.
KAFOs are used to simultaneously control the movement of the knee and ankle. KAFOs are commonly used in the treatment of clients with neurological conditions such as Cerebral Palsy, MS, Spina Bifida and traumatic brain injury.
Lycra garments can be provided as full suits, vests, shorts, sleeves, gauntlets, socks or gloves. Lycra is useful for adults and children with neurological conditions such as cerebral Palsy, stroke, head injury and multiple sclerosis. Benefits include; improved functional ability, improved posture, improved joint position, pain relief. Our orthotists are specially trained to measure and fit lycra garments.
Knee braces are provided for a wide range of conditions including knee ligament injuries, sports injuries, arthritis and patella dislocations. Manchester Orthotics provide both off the shelf and custom made knee braces for all conditions. Knee braces help to reduce pain, allow individuals to continue with normal everyday life, return to contact sports, skiing etc. and stabilise the knee.
Various orthotics are available for the upper limb. Custom made and of the shelf splints are available for the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder for musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
Neck braces are commonly used to immobilise a neck after a fracture or severe acute injury. They can also be used to offer positional support for numerous conditions including Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoporosis, muscle weakness and Osteoarthritis.

Manchester Orthotics can choose from any orthotic footwear manufacture which allows a greater choice of styles and colours. Our footwear can help with a range of foot problems including swollen feet, bunions, toe deformities, lymphodema, rheumatism, diabetes and osteoarthritis.
Shoe adaptations can be made to fit most shoes. Adaptations include compensatory raises, rocker soles, wedges, flares and many more.
Night Splints are often used to maintain support to limbs while sleeping at night. This can be to prevent muscle tightness, improve sleeping posture or reduce painful spasms.
